“Piece Of My Heart” by Big Brother & The Holding Company
Dick Cavett once asked Janis Joplin why so few women sing Rock & Roll, and her answer was very telling: “I guess they think it’s not very ladylike.” Pop music is foreplay, Pop music is safe and non-confrontational, but Rock & Roll is all about sex and rebellion. It’s the exact opposite of whatever the fuck “ladylike” was supposed to mean. Decades later, the music industry still doesn’t know what to do with female talent, and even aside from her amazing voice there’s still something revolutionary about Janis’ choice to perform this kind of music.
It’s not just that I love her records. I think Janis Joplin was an awesome human being. She was every inch a lady while refusing to be “ladylike.”
