“Will We Be Scared?” by Thee Oh Sees
This is one beautiful record. My copy of Putrifiers II finally arrived in the mail yesterday, and I fuckin’ love it. Remember Wilco’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, the way that album deconstructed and reconstructed Folk music? Well, John Dwyer has done the same for psychedelic Pop. This may be his most experimental record yet; I’m hearing violins (fucking violins?), electronic instruments, ambient effects… Actually, this record makes a fine companion to last year’s Carrion Crawler/The Dream; that record skews Rock while this one leans Pop. I may have to play them back-to-back sometime…
Putrifiers II has been released by the In The Red label, so this record will be reaching a lot of folks who’ve never heard Thee Oh Sees before. It’s probably a good place to start, being equal parts accessible and weird-ass shit.
