“Try a Little Tenderness” by Otis Redding

How do you explain Otis Redding to a friend who’s only ever heard “Dock Of The Bay”? 

He was only twenty-six when he died.  He was a maniac onstage.  He was vulnerable in ways James Brown or Al Green could never show.  He learned something from the Blues: What’s worse than heartbreak is still being in love even after you know it’s hopeless.  He’s the Charlie Brown of Soul: He’ll never get to kick that football, but he won’t ever stop trying.
