Factory Records was a groundbreaking independent label in the UK Post-Punk scene, putting out records by Joy Division, New Order, Cabaret Voltaire, A Certain Ratio, and The Durutti Column, among others. The men behind this label viewed their records—I mean the records themselves, the sleeves and liner notes and whatnot—as a form of conceptual art and put as much work into the packaging as the music itself. If you have any of those early Factory Records releases, hang onto them, because they’ve got to be worth more than your life by now.
Anyhow, I’ve been diving into the Communications 1978-1992 collection lately. The first disc—their early releases—is just brilliant from start to finish, the second disc is almost as good, but the last two discs… well, there’s a reason Factory Records isn’t with us anymore. Still, these guys brought us some great music back in the day. Here’s “Time Goes By So Slow” by The Distractions.
