Memo to Anyone Unfamiliar with John Cale’s Solo Albums:

Much as I love Lou Reed (or his work, at least—the man himself is reportedly kind of a dick), I think he gets a little too much credit for The Velvet Underground.  I dig Loaded as much as the next guy, but those first two records with John Cale were the best.  Years before Punk, the man knew how to turn noise into an art form.

I’ve already posted “Fear Is A Man’s Best Friend” from his early solo album Fear, and one of these days I ought to post something from his masterpiece Paris 1919, but right now I’m listening to his most recent album.  I find it oddly comforting that, even this late in his career, John Cale still has a sinister streak.  From his 2005 album blackAcetate, here’s “For A Ride.”
