Back in 2004, Steve Earle hurriedly recorded an album called The Revolution Starts Now as a preemptive celebration of George Bush’s inevitable defeat. That was the idea, anyhow. Turned out that Republicans were still pretty good at stealing a close election, and way too damn many of Mr. Earle’s fellow Americans were happy to cast their votes for that prick.
Getting back to the point: This track, “Condi, Condi,” is a tongue-in-cheek love song for Condoleezza Rice. Which is a fine joke and only ruined by the fact that this song is just so damn sweet. If Steve Earle had written this song for just about any other woman in the world, she probably would’ve married him.
